This week, while taking a Lyft ride that was surprisingly smooth but suspiciously louder than usual, I noticed something that the driver was manually shifting gears.
I really like this driving-a-car-with-a-stick-shift metaphor! You could expand on it with how we think we have maps which show us the way, only to realize they're someone else's map, or they don't correspond to the land we're crossing, or that they were made centuries ago, or that (even were they to be accurate) we don't know our position on them - so we know neither where we are nor where we're supposed to be going. When "the map is not the territory" what is to guide us? Perhaps the answer is the Way; and trusting that it will appear if we do our daily job of just showing up and putting one foot in front of another. Or perhaps I should say: start in first gear (not fourth), ease in the clutch, and remember not to white-knuckle the steering wheel (that's the "trust" part).
Shift happens! Step in it. You might not always smell roses, but they will grow back.
I was hoping I’d hear from you. Thanks for sharing as always. Have an amazing weekend Jesse.
Great metaphors! I did love driving a stick shift!
Did? No more? 🤔

Very interesting reflection Francis. Let me ponder this and see if I can integrate it in an upcoming post. 🙏
