The first time I heard Jim Rohn speak live in Chicago in the 1990s, his words lit a fire in me. Among the many pearls of wisdom he shared, one stood out and took root in my life:
“A life worth living is a life worth recording.”
That single idea changed the trajectory of my personal growth. So for over 35 years, I have been journaling—capturing my thoughts, ideas, struggles, and aspirations on paper.
Journaling has been more than just a habit….. It has been a sanctuary, a compass, and a mirror. It’s guided me through life’s uncertainties, helping me uncover the deeper truths hidden beneath the surface of my everyday experiences.
Over time, I discovered an unexpected intersection between journaling, reading, Qigong meditation, and Taoism—a convergence that has profoundly shaped my understanding of myself and the world.
Journaling as a Gateway to Inner Truths
Life, like the teachings of the Tao, is fluid. It cannot be grasped, controlled, or confined to rigid expectations. Instead, it must be flowed with, embraced, and observed with curiosity.
This, for me, is where journaling becomes such a powerful tool. It is not just about recording events from my lived experience but about cultivating a conversation with myself—one that allows me to engage with the ebb and flow of my journey.
Through years of practice, I have realized that journaling is a form of alchemy—transforming the raw material of thoughts, emotions, and experiences into wisdom.
It is a practice of deep listening to oneself, something that aligns beautifully with the principles of Taoist philosophy and Qigong. Just as Qigong harnesses and directs the flow of Qi (life energy) within the body, journaling channels the energy of the mind, allowing clarity and insight to emerge.
This practice has helped me answer questions I didn’t even know I was asking, revealing patterns in my thinking and behavior that were otherwise invisible. It has given me the space to examine my fears, cultivate gratitude, and refine my vision for the future.
The I Ching and the Path of Emergence
One of the most profound moments in my journaling practice came when I encountered Hexagram 3 of the I Ching, “Sprouting” or “Difficulty at the Beginning.”
This hexagram speaks to the challenges that arise at the start of any great endeavor. It is a reminder that new beginnings are often chaotic, uncertain, and difficult, yet they hold immense potential for growth.
Journaling has been my tool for navigating these difficult beginnings. It has helped me make sense of confusion, ground myself when the world feels unstable, and embrace the wisdom of patience.
When life has felt like an entanglement of uncertain steps, my journal has been the place where I untangle my thoughts and allow clarity to emerge, much like the first sprout breaking through the soil.
If you are facing a transition in life—whether personal, professional, or spiritual—you may be experiencing your own version of Hexagram 3.
The way forward is not about forcing control but about allowing the process of emergence. Journaling is a bridge to that process, allowing you to record your own becoming.

If you feel called to a deeper level of self-discovery, now is the time to begin. The world is noisy, fast, and full of distractions, but your inner world is waiting to be explored. By committing to a journaling practice, you are choosing to create space for your thoughts, listen to your inner wisdom, and align with the natural flow of your life.
As the Taoist sage Lao Tzu reminds us:
“A good traveler has no fixed plans and has no intent on arriving.”
This is the essence of Nomadic Wisdom Journaling—it is not about arriving at a final answer, but about embracing the journey itself.
So, are you ready to embark on this path? Your future self—the one who will look back with gratitude for the wisdom you captured—will thank you.

Same here, I've journaled daily since high school. I'm a big fan of "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron, and the process of morning pages.
100% aligned with journaling! I have an entire cabinet of journals from the early 1990s. Last week, I randomly pulled out a journal from 2008, to reflect on what was going on in my world at the time. It was a fascinating step back into my life and of the world for 4 months in ‘08. I recommend skimming what was on your mind years ago-as we live in the present. I added new details to my current entries after flipping through 2008.
