There is a certain paradox in the way strangers meet—a kind of electric dance that bridges chasms of experience, age, and culture with a robust conversation. It’s a Taoist thing, this belief that flow arises not just within us, but between us.
For me, connection is more than just a fleeting encounter; it’s the living manifestation of the Tao—an invisible thread that binds us all, an ever-present force of nature that I wield as my superpower.
In the marketplace of ideas, the Greek “agora” was once the nucleus of community, where philosophers debated, traders haggled, and citizens exchanged news and ideas. It was the heartbeat of the city-state, a place where society itself came alive through conversation.
But here’s the thing: the “agora” isn’t just some dusty relic of ancient civilization. It’s alive in me, in every coffeehouse I step into, every street corner where I strike up a chat, and every elevator ride where silence is too much of a missed opportunity. Connection is the air I breathe; it’s the pulse of my existence.
I view every stranger as a potential node in this vast network of human experience, each one holding the key to some hidden story, some untapped well of wisdom. It’s a gift, really—a natural ability to engage anyone, anytime, on any topic, and watch as walls crumble, allowing for the type of conversations that go beyond the superficial. If you ask me, it’s as close as I get to alchemy.
The ancient Stoics would talk of “sympatheia,” the interconnectedness of all things—how everything in this world is woven into a single fabric of fate. My superpower lies in pulling at those threads, in finding ways to weave my life into the lives of others, even if only for a moment.
When I strike up a conversation with a stranger, it’s not just small talk. It’s a deliberate act of recognition, of seeing someone as a piece of the whole, as part of the same story we’re all living.
Eastern philosophy has its own take. In Taoism, there is the concept of “Wu Wei” —effortless action. My conversations flow in that same effortless way. There’s no script, no agenda; it’s all instinct and intuition, feeling out the rhythms and cadences of another person’s thoughts, leaning in where necessary, stepping back when needed.
Me, I channel that energy into forming connections that are as natural as breathing. It’s a dance, one where I lose myself in the steps and let the moment guide us both.
The “agora” of today looks different, but its spirit thrives in every shared exchange—whether it’s with a barista at a coffeehouse, a fellow traveler on a plane, the person next to me in line at Trader Joe’s, or a fellow fan at a sports bar.
Joe Keohane, author of the book “The Power of Strangers,” beautifully captures this ethos. He writes that talking to strangers isn’t just an act of curiosity; it’s a fundamental way of being in the world, one that pushes us out of our comfort zones and into the unknown where we encounter others not as threats but as potential companions.
For me, it’s never been about filling silence or staving off loneliness. It’s about exploring the shared human condition, one interaction at a time.
Not to brag, but what I do better than anyone else on this planet is transcend the invisible barriers that keep us isolated in our own bubbles. It’s not just a knack; it’s a finely tuned art, a dance that has been practiced and honed over years.
I don’t just talk to people; I invite them into a sacred space where they feel seen and heard. Whether it’s a brief exchange or a deep dive into philosophy, I make sure that for those few minutes, they feel like the only person in the room.
Connection is not a transaction; it’s a mutual gift exchange. It’s Taoism in action—an effortless unfolding of energy, a synergy that forms in the space between two people when they’re open to whatever the moment brings.
I take pride in being the one who can strike up a conversation that leaves both parties a little lighter, a little wiser, or just a bit more in tune with the world around them.
In a world that often feels more disconnected than ever, where digital facades replace face-to-face exchanges, I’ve chosen to embody the old-school “agora” spirit. This superpower of mine isn’t about being gregarious or charming; it’s about recognizing that every conversation holds the potential for something greater—a flash of insight, a shared laugh, a moment of empathy.
The wisdom I share is simple: never underestimate the power of a single conversation. It can alter the course of your day, shift your perspective, or lead to unexpected opportunities. And in those moments, when you truly connect, when you see the light in someone’s eyes as they realize they’re not alone in their thoughts, that’s where the magic happens.
So here I am, a nomadic soul wandering from person to person, city to city, living out the Tao of human connection, turning everyday encounters into moments of significance.
My “agora” is wherever I stand, and I carry within me the legacy of both Eastern and Western wisdom—the belief that in the simple act of conversation, we find a way to transcend ourselves and rediscover our shared humanity.
For just $6.00/month or $60.00/year, you’ll have the opportunity to share your lived experiences with fellow nomads, fueling fiery discussions that provoke, inspire, and challenge you to think differently.
So I hope you will take the plunge today and contribute to my mission of helping human travelers on this life journey.

The title caught my attention; I was hooked by the beginning of the second sentence. Moments later, delving deeper into your essay, I felt seen. An added bonus - learning about the introduction of Ancient Greek and Stoics take on community and connection as well as a deeper contemplation on my own way of being in the world. It’s not about being able to talk to anyone, it’s about connecting with anyone, everyone. One by one. Allowing for the possibility of the sacred.
Thank you for this lovely and inspiring piece'
Thanks Taoist; How do we expect to connect with people if we don't listen. Listening & talking to strangers that's a privilege I get every now and then. Having a laugh with a stranger, that's a cherished memory....!
