Can’t Ya Just Breathe Deep and Chill Out?
How To Keep Cool in a World That's Lost Its Marbles
Step right up, folks! You’re at the edge of a serene lake. Or maybe it’s the precipice of modern chaos.
So take a deep breath. Go on, fill those lungs. Feels good, right?
In a world that's flipped its lid, where every unexpected life event or every news alert sends a shiver down your spine, isn't it radical to just... breathe?
Let's face it: these days, keeping your cool is less about the thermostat and more about mastering your inhale-exhale game. As the world spins faster, your breath remains your personal pause button, a way to slow down time—or at least your reaction to it.
You've got ancient wisdom on your side here. From the meditative sways of Tai Qi and QiGong to the spiritual nuggets of my long-time Taoist teacher Casey Kotchmer, the message rings loud and clear: your breath isn't just about staying alive; it's about living spiritedly.
The Art of the Pause
Picture this: your life as a high-speed chase. Now, imagine Casey throwing down those spike strips called "pauses." Screech to a halt, and take that sacred pit stop. These moments aren't just for catching your breath; they're for savoring it, molding it into a fine art. Casey's all about these pauses, teaching us that sometimes, you gotta stop, drop, and roll with the breath to escape the flames of daily madness.
The Oxygen Buzz
Think of deep breathing as your body’s internal energy drink—minus the jitters and the crash. With every deep inhale, you're not just sucking in air; you're drawing in life force, jazzing up every cell, and clearing the mental fog. Ancient cool cat Lao Tzu might say, “The essence of the universe breathes through you.” That’s right, you’re practically cosmic!
Chillax with Your Diaphragm
Here’s the scoop: deep breathing is like throwing a chill party in your nervous system. The diaphragm drops, the belly expands, and the party kicks off with a calming vibe. It’s your body’s natural way of telling your brain, "Hey, let’s turn down the stress disco and up the relaxation reggae." Embrace the ebb and flow of your breath and find that sweet, sweet zen.
Detox Like a Boss
Forget juice cleanses. If you want a real detox, just breathe. Deep exhales are your body's own detox squad, booting out toxins and stale vibes like bouncers at a nightclub. This internal cleanse is what the old sages were all about, keeping you pure and balanced, ready to face whatever weird curveball the world throws next.
Supercharge Your Gut and Guard
Breathing deeply doesn’t just jazz up your immune system—it’s like sending your antibodies to boot camp, making them tough and ready for battle. Plus, it gets your digestive tract in groove mode, digesting your lunch like a smooth dance rather than a wrestling match.
Deep Dive into Breath Lit
Need more? Hit the books. "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art" by James Nestor is your guide to why old-school breathing is your new best friend.
I highly recommend it
And then there’s Patrick McKeown's "The Oxygen Advantage"? It's like the secret playbook for turning your breath into your superpower.
For a side of zen with your oxygen, "The Healing Power of the Breath" by Richard P. Brown and Patricia L. Gerbarg unpacks how a good inhale-exhale can be your emotional anchor in a sea of chaos. And if you’re looking for a breath-based boot camp, check out "Breathing For Warriors" by Dr. Belisa Vranich for a 14-day total transformation.
Embrace the Pause—Again and Again
So, as you dodge those daily bullets of stress and absurdity, remember what Casey Kotchmer preaches about the power of the pause. Hit it frequently. Inhale the future, exhale the past, and plant your feet firmly in the now.
Bottom line? Keep coming back to your breath. It’s the cheapest, simplest form of therapy around, and guess what—it travels with you. In the circus of today’s world, let your breath be your personal clown, juggling your stresses and turning them into balloons. After all, if you can breathe, you can choose to laugh, to pause, and to live fully—even when the world seems a bit off its rocker.

Every little bit counts.

Pranayama, or Breath Control, is the 4th limb of yoga. We can affect how we feel in so many ways simply by controlling the breath. BKS Inyengar wrote Light on Pranayama which gives very detailed instation many types of breathing. My copy is 30 years old, but I think there are newer, updated iterations. Worth a look!
