There comes a time when life will test you. It will hurl storms your way, demanding more from you than you believed you could give. In those moments, you may feel overwhelmed, a boat adrift in a sea of turmoil.
But it is precisely in those trials that you find the hidden reserves within, those untapped strengths that lie dormant, waiting for adversity to awaken them.
“The obstacle is the way,” Marcus Aurelius wrote, encapsulating the Stoic understanding that what stands in your way can become the way itself.
This is not a denial of pain or a naïve optimism, but a profound recognition that your spirit, when pressed, has the capacity to expand beyond its perceived limits. Like tempered steel, you are forged through fire, becoming sharper, stronger, more resilient.
How I Found Inner Strength Amidst Brokenness and Being Unhoused
In 2019, my life took a sharp detour from romantic bliss to solo survival, trading shared sheets for the stiff seats of Lestat’s, a 24-hour coffeehouse on University Avenue in San Diego. Here, among an eclectic brew of students, bohemians, and drifters, I found shelter along with an outlet for my dwindling spirit.
Taoism, in its gentle wisdom, tells us to embrace this dance of life, to yield like water around the stone. "The greatest virtue is to follow the Tao and the Tao alone," says Laozi, reminding us that resistance to what is will only drain your spirit.
Instead, trust the flow of events, for in the yielding, in the letting go, you find your truest strength. It is not the rigidity of the oak that survives the storm, but the flexibility of the bamboo.
And then there is the wisdom of the Jewish sacred text Kabbalah, whispering from its depths that the trials you face are not merely external tests, but opportunities for inner transformation.
“There is no light without darkness," it exhorts, urging you to delve into the hidden chambers of your soul, to wrestle with your shadow until you emerge, not purified, but integrated, whole.
In the Kabbalistic view, each challenge is a spark of divine intention, a chance to elevate yourself and the world around you.
Consider the life of one of my favorite heroes, anti-apartheid activist and former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela. Twenty-seven years imprisoned, his body confined, his spirit unbroken. How easy it would have been for bitterness to take root, for anger to become the defining feature of his existence.
But instead, Mandela found within himself a reservoir of forgiveness, a strength that astonished the world. He emerged from his trial not as a victim of circumstance, but as a beacon of reconciliation, his inner strength a testament to the transformative power of adversity.
Mandela’s journey teaches that it is not the absence of hardship that defines us, but the way we respond to it. His prison cell became his sanctuary, a crucible where his soul was refined, where he discovered the strength to forgive not just his captors, but a system that sought to dehumanize him.
His trial introduced him to the unyielding power of his own spirit, a strength that lay hidden beneath layers of suffering and struggle.
So when life presents you with trials, do not shy away. Do not wish them away or curse your fate. Instead, lean into them. See them for what they truly are: opportunities to meet parts of yourself that you would never have known otherwise.
View them as invitations to shed the skin of your past, to emerge renewed, more capable, more aligned with the essence of who you truly are.
Your trials will strip away the unnecessary, the superficial, leaving only the core of your being. And in that core, you will find the strength to persevere, to rise, to shine. For the trials you face are not punishments, but gifts, introducing you to the depths of your own strength, the wellspring of resilience that flows within you.
Remember that, like Mandela, your strength is not measured by how easily life bends to your will, but by how gracefully you bend to life’s will. You are stronger than you know, more resilient than you can imagine. Let the trials introduce you to your strengths, for in this meeting, you will find the essence of who you are meant to be.
